Overall a Good Bicycle Carrier : Thule 915XT Roadway 5 Bike Hitch Carrier

I purchased a Thule (though Amazon) because I have been an avid bicycle enthusiast for the last 25 years and have come to trust their products. Out of the box, the carrier took me maybe all of 5 minutes to set up; this carrier is simple and well made. I gave the product four stars based on the fact that this is sold as a 5 bicycle carrier, however, to actually mount all 5 bikes you would have to remove wheels or pedals to get them close enough to one another to fit into the mounting brackets. That's not a huge deal, but then again, I don't want to spend an hour loading/unloading bikes every time I take the family out for a ride. The following is a roll-up of the good and the bad with this system:

The Good -
1. Easy to assemble and mount
2. Thule "quick release" system allows you to raise and lower the rack quickly; my Honda Ridgeline tailgate can be lowered the traditional way with the rack in the lowered position, however, there is still not enough room for the tailgate to be opened laterally (this is not a problem for most pick-ups)
3. Rubber bands used to secure the bikes are easy to use and will not allow the bikes to "sway" into one another

The Bad -
1. Like many other models, this rack requires a screw to be mounted through the trailer hitch instead of the locking pin that most people use to keep their ball hitch from being stolen. Thule sells their own locking screw in lieu of the bolt, but that's more money and should be figured into the overall price of the rack. A work-around is there are two metal loops at the bottom of the rack. I plan on running a bike lock through the loops and then through the safety chain receiver on the truck.

2. As other people have stated, it is difficult to actually mount 5 bikes on this rack. The work-around is to remove wheels and/or pedals based on the characteristics of the bikes you are planning to haul. Not a big deal for a long-haul, but not great for just "around-the-neighborhood" transportation. If you want to haul three bikes, it's too easy.

3. The lateral anti-sway brackets are made in such a way that they could eventually fall off if you don't take the time to ensure that they are still locked on correctly. As for now with a new system, the brackets are still too "stiff" to move freely, but over time and a lot of use, I could see how they could eventually loosen up and then fall off when not in use and driving on a rough road or trail.

Overall I like this system and recommend it for potential buyers; the system secures the bikes well and will not allow your bikes to be damaged in transient. Just be aware that loading more than three bikes will take more time, practice, and patience.

I have owned this carrier now for about 3 years with no issues, however; if you have duel suspension bikes, you will need the adapter to use a top tube mounting system (like this one). If you own/transport duel suspension bikes, I would consider the platform systems instead. Also, spend the extra money and get the swing arm. You'll be happy, especially as you watch me download my stuff to open the tailgate.

His only complaint is that the bikes are really close together on the rack if you have 3 or 4. However my complaints are long... My first complaint is it is very hard to fit a girls or woman's style bike on this rack, it takes extra effort to get it on where the men's style just glides right on. My second complaint is with a 4 bike load it makes it top heavy and the whole thing hits on the street. We drove from Colorado to Oregon with 2 bikes on it and it was still heavy enough to hit in driveways and such unless you drive though them at an angle, which is sometimes impossible to do. I do love that it attaches to the hitch and it swings out so you can still open the back of the car. But even that is a pain, because the heaviness of the bikes you can't unscrew the knob to let it swing out. You literally have to push the bikes back and hold them to take the weight off so you can unscrew it to swing out. I can't do that on my own, which is very inconvenient.

The Thule model is well made, has sturdy straps with good buckles and an easy way of tying down to the trunk sides and bottom. I use it for a 27 lb bike and a 37 lb three wheel recumbent. The rubber saddles and straps are good. For my heavy recumbent bike I had to place hose clamps on the bars to prevent the saddles from moving. The bars holding the bikes can be rotated down for storage but with a little difficulty in pressing the two buttons to release the arms.

I bought the three bike unit because it has a higher listed weight capacity but I suspect it is the same product as the two bike unit but with longer bars.

The saddles and straps save time. I no longer need to spend much time using bungee cords. It is important to get the trunk side and bottom straps snug so they don't loosen on the road.
I called Thule and got an answer to my question about the height of the assembly.

This is a good product and I am glad I bought it.

We recently went on vacation and used it to transport 4 bikes (2 adult, 2 older children) and were able to get them on fairly easily. 4 adults size bikes might be a tight fit. Our trip was 2 hours mostly highway driving going approximately 65-70 mph and we had no issues with the bikes coming lose. The bikes did bounce a bit but stayed secure to the rack. We used the black rubber holders but it also comes with another fastener which straps everything together to the rack for added protection just in case a strap comes lose or lets go. As for people stealing the rack off the car, we vacation on Cape Cod and left the rack on all week and I'm happy to say we still have it. I've already had 2 people at work ask about the rack because they liked the looks of it so much. I've recommended it to both.
